Santa Eulalia is ideal for planting Black Truffles

January 29, 2021

From Teruel, we can confirm that the Black Truffle requires specific conditions for optimal productivity. Traditionally, its cultivation took place in Mediterranean climates; however, in recent decades, it has spread to other countries such as Australia, Chile, and the USA

Climate is an important element for effective production. Santa Eulalia has a specific climate in which temperatures are not very extreme, and rainfall, although scarce in some seasons, is usually regular. However, we at Sentidos Truferos compensate for this lack of rain with irrigation implemented on all our land, thus ensuring that the plantation always has enough moisture to try to guarantee the success of the season.

Besides the climate, we must not forget the quality of the soil , the air, the previous work done on the land and even the surrounding vegetation, and of course, the perseverance of our truffle growers and the enthusiasm of our dogs.

Regarding soil quality, the Black Truffle is a fungus that grows in calcareous and well-drained environments, although it is necessary to carry out a prior soil analysis to obtain parameters such as moisture, pH, nitrogen, potassium, calcium…

After the analysis is completed, the work must be done with the cultivator to prepare the land for the subsequent planting, usually of holm oaks and oaks . The dedication doesn't end there; pruning, weeding, watering, and close attention are still necessary. If any of these parameters are not met, the harvest will be lost.

As truffle growers, we're sure this information has been helpful, but it's so uncertain that optimal production can't be guaranteed even when following all the parameters outlined above. So, we wish you the best of luck if you're thinking of getting started in this world... and if you're already involved, you'll know what we mean! It's been a pleasure!
