A snowy year is a prosperous year

A YEAR OF SNOW, A YEAR OF PROSPEROUSNESS

2021 has started off spectacularly. Teruel has been completely blanketed in white, as have many other parts of Spain (Madrid included), and all thanks to Filomena . We had been warned, but no one expected Filomena to unleash such a strong and determined character. Just 10 days after the last snowflakes fell in Santa Eulalia, a cold wave hit, plunging the town into -25°C, with daytime highs below freezing.

We can say that 2021 is off to a strong start with these snowfalls, because as the saying goes, "a snowy year, a prosperous year." And it's not simply because it snowed; it goes much deeper. According to the elders in our villages, snowfall is an effective predictor of the year's weather. Thus, starting the year with snow is a strong indicator of the upcoming harvests.

According to old proverbs, a year that begins with snow is synonymous with bountiful, high-quality harvests. The same is expected to be true for the black diamond that has us all so enamored, the Black Truffle . After these snows, all truffle growers hope that the truffles have enjoyed optimal conditions to continue growing in our lands. At Sentidos Truferos, we are eager to return to the place that brings us joy (and the occasional scare), to take our dogs along, and begin searching for these treasures that nature has buried.

Thanks to the snow, the soil stays moist for longer and retains more water than when it rains. Weeds also have more difficulty growing outdoors to feed on air, and once the snow melts, rivers will increase their flow, as will aquifers and underground rivers .

We have nothing more to say than that we hope to see you from time to time, Filomena, but don't be so impetuous. Happy 2021, truffle lovers!
